Pieces waiting for framing.
Thoughts on Summer...back in June, I had a big plan of attack.
- come up with a Social Media Strategy
- get upcoming workshops written, photographed, and promoted.
- start looking for galleries outside of Iowa.
- get down to business on a series I started in April
- explore different adhesives
- and most importantly...nail the "why" on my artist statement
I love Paper 53 for sketching and drawing.
Something I discovered about myself is that if a system has too much formatting, I can get all caught up in trying to make it pretty. Hours later, I am down some "graphic arts" rabbit hole with nothing accomplished. I also finally admitted to myself that writing is excruciating for me. I get so self conscious, I edit the heck out of things and have nothing left at the end.
How did I solve the problem? I went to formats that I couldn't mess around with as much. For everyday documentation of the studio, Insta-gram has become my new favorite. It is so easy and fun.
I like Tumblr for creating "photo essays". I also find it easier to connect with other artists. The one thing I don't like is I haven't figured out how to comment.
Facebook is where I am doing all of my quick announcements. I find it is easy to share information, and the comment part is a lot easier than Tumblr. I post most of my art activity on my "fan page" and reserve my personal page for more family oriented things.
The Newsletter has been on Summer vacation. Next month, I'll start sending it out again. If you want to get info sent directly to you at your email address, signup here.
I've got everything written and even added supply lists. I've excited to announce I've been selected to go to New Orleans in October and study painting with Patty Brady of Golden Artists Paints. Not only do I think my work will grow, I'll have lots of new techniques to share with my students. Currently, I'm looking for places to teach outside of Cedar Rapids. I have a three day workshop in Madison, WI scheduled for October. Want me to come teach in your area? Send me a note.
I've got a really good list and will start sending out my portfolio this Fall.
I have two solos and a two person exhibit coming up next year. I've got the work completed for the two person and one of the solos shows. I feel like I am on a roll.
Can we say giant sticker?
I've made a lot of progress. I've discovered some new things that I'll be sharing in upcoming collage classes. I've discovered some large format double stick adhesive that is amazing!
The "Why" of the artist statement:
This year I hired an art business coach to help me with some of the hard stuff. Noah Keesucker from Springboard for the Arts has been an invaluable resource. Noah has helped me with all of my punchlist. I wouldn't have made as much progress without him. Thank you Noah!
I hope you all had a great Summer! Onward...
